On Stranger Tides Mermaids scene

Review: Johnny Depp's crafty old salt Captain Jack Sparrow and his arch rival, Geoffrey Rush's peg-legged Captain Hector Barbossa, and the two are joined by newcomers lady pirate Angelica (Pen�lope Cruz) and evil Captain Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) certainly is at the center of On Stranger Tides as the new movie leaves behind Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan, whose stories ended with the first trilogy.

This time around Jack is on a search for the legendary Fountain of Youth - a search motivated by a former lover of Jack�s, Angelica, who Jack may or may not have corrupted from a potential life of purity, and who happens to be the daughter of �the pirates that all pirates fear,� Blackbeard. Time is spent building the mythos of Blackbeard, Ponce de Leon, mermaids, and the troubled past of Jack and Angelica. We fell in love with Captain Jack Sparrow because of his selfish, scalawag nature - you remember: �Pirate!� Pirates does deliver some wondrous action sequences, many of which evoke some of the best moments of the previous films (an early fight sequence between Jack and� well, himself, is very similar to Jack�s first swordfight with Will Turner in the first movie). The story here isn�t bad either, just a little bloated and lacking the pirate style antics we�ve come to expect from Captain Jack Sparrow.

It is testimony to the runaway popularity of Johnny Depp�s stylised turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean that in this, the fourth film of the series, nearly every character resembles him. Sparrow is so watch- able that the Pirates films should be like modern day versions of Hope and Crosby�s Road movies.
