The New Mortal Kombat 9 Fatalities. Overview: Sadly the Mortal Kombat (MK) series hasn�t been doing too well lately. This revealed flaws in the game's combat system. In what seems to be a big middle finger to 360 owners and our biggest gripe of the game is that PS3 owners get Kratos as a playable character. It�s fun to play, has loads of content and has all the elements that made the original MK games great. As everyone and their mother knows by now, the latest Mortal Kombat game was released worldwide this week, and many of us have here on TGV have been enjoying the game immensely since its launch.

Mortal Kombat has had a pretty rough history as a series, mostly notorious for a lot of gimmicks plus an apparent reliance on blood and gore. Then in terms of game play and controls, Mortal Kombat opts to let most characters have access to a universal set of attacks that cover the basic needs (uppercuts to stop jumping attacks, leg sweeps to knock your foe down, etc.) while giving them unique combos and special moves.

The controls are relatively simple; you have two punch buttons, two kicks, a block button, and a throw button. This allows Mortal Kombat to be accessible to newer players, and places a greater emphasis on the mental aspect of the genre; it�s more important to learn how to make your opponent do an attack you have predicted and then counter it, than to learn impossibly complex motions. A large roster of playable characters, roughly thirty, is one of Mortal Kombat�s greatest strengths. The meter builds when you take damage, do special techniques, or the opponent blocks your attacks. Beyond a competent fighting game engine, Mortal Kombat offers tons of extras to appeal to lots of players. Playing earns points that you can spend on unlockables, ranging from new music and costumes to extra Fatality attacks for each character among other things. A reasonably well-featured training mode is also available, which works alongside the story mode to help you learn how to use most of the characters. Despite doing so many things well, Mortal Kombat does have some meaningful flaws. Even with the above problems, Mortal Kombat is both a successful revival of its series and a good fighting game that should entertain both competitive and more relaxed players. With a good roster of characters, tons of content to go through, and simple controls joined by interesting depth of play, the game has a lot to recommend. It�s already great in its current form, and possible adjustments by the developers could make it a genuine classic in the fighting game genre.
