Hands On, Nokia X6 - Review and Specification

Written By Drakor on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 | 11:17 PM

X initial in Nokia refers to entertainment and social networking. The focus part is on multimedia side. One of the series is Nokia X6, presented as music series with lots of feature and 16 GB internal memory.

First criteria to be considered as capable music phone is in this product, which is the capasitive display instead of resisitive. This feature surely more finger friendly and easy to use..

Nokia X6 promoted with "Comes With Music" ads line. This is a promotion feature that allow user to downloads free music through Nokia Music store. One year downloads period is given by Nokia. This surely can consider as an extra. But user might want to consider their mobile internet connection that surely won't be free either.

Nokia X6, review by G-spot

Nokia X6 Design & Interface
Thick candy bar shape, almost at same size with Nokia 5800. Not many buttons can be found in the front face. Below the screen, there are 3 button. Two is for Call and End Call, and the other is Menu button. They work same as other Symbian phone series.

In this side we also got sensitive button for media bar in the top right side of screen. In active mode, we can use it to activate media menu. Same button as other Nokia Symbian 5th multimedia phone such as Nokia 5800 XM or 5530. In the top, they place front camera and next to it is earpiece.

Go to right side, you can find camera button, display switch and volume adjuster. At the top side, there power switch, charger connector, 3.5mm audio jack and micro USB port. On the left, there are 2 speaker tunnel and SIM card slot between it.

Operating System in Nokia X6 is Symbian S60 5th edition version 9.4. This mean they installed the latest Symbian OS to this phone. Menu and Today's screen look same as other S60 Symbian 5th edition phone.

As the main feature, Nokia X6 use capasitive touch screen with TFT 16,7m colors. This the first XpressMusic phone that use this display technology. Menu access became more ease, especially when typing email or sms.

This capasitive sensor is different with resistive in Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. Main diferrence is on the sensor type. Where capasitive screen needs electric conductor to work. Human finger as example is the good electric conductor. So we can't use stylus or pen to interact with phone display. While resistive is vice versa, more sensitive with physical type input.

Display size is 3.2 inch with 640 x 360 px resolution. Auto rotate feature, so it can adapt with phone vertical and horizontal position using accelerometer technology.

The main bug came from slow synchonization between touch screen and menu interface and application inside. Where we should click options > exit to close an application. If there are exit button like in iPhone surely more helpful. Or by click clear (c) button so we can close application by click on multi task button.

Nokia X6 Multimedia

Camera
Photography ability in Nokia X6 is good enough. Powered with 5 MP camera with Carl Zeiss sensor. Professional feature can be choose like autofocus, white balance, iso, color tone, macro mode, red eye reduction, dual LED flash light and etc. This is quite complete for a camera phone.

When talking about quality, it still not that powerful. Especially for indoor use with dual LED active. It show a bit blur image. Maybe from the flash light reflection or the lens not powerful enough.

While for outdoor take, image result is good enough (with the flash light inactive).

For video recording, this camera phone can record VGA resolution video with 30fps. Also available widescreen resolution, same in 30 fps.

Music Player
This phone use N series standard music player, which same with 5800. Music file sorting capability and audio produced is good.

Interesting feature in this music player is we can transfer music via synchonization with other Nokia application or by drag and drop like other digital music player. So we won't get much trouble like how the iPhone did.

Video Player
Next is Symbian standard video player in Nokia X6. Supporting video files are MPEG4-SP 30 fps VGA, MPEG4-AVC 30 fps QVGA, WMV9 30 fps QVGA, MPEG4-SP 30 fps nHD. Limitation in resolution, 30fps max. Which mean only some certain fps MPEG4 file playable in X6.

Connectivity
X6 have Bluetooth, data cable, 3.6 mbps HSPA and WiFi if you prefer to connect mobile internet from hotspor area.

While for web browsing, X6 use Symbian 5th type web browser, this browser work well in touch screen.

Instalation and Application

Inside X6 can be found Nokia Music Store application, which allow free downloads. Similar type with iTunes Store from Apple. This music stor is supported by many of record company.

X6 user who own Ovi account can download freely through this application. But unable to transfer it to other cell phone. This is related with DRM inside every music file that we downloaded.

X6 also have GPS assited type receiver. complete with Ovi Map version 3 that has support free navigation feature. As an extra, there FM radio with RDS, Flash lite 3 for video streaming and gaming.

Battery
Using lithium ion 1320 mAh, it could handle all power consumable features in X6. This big cell capacity usable up to 2 - 3 days for regular usage.

Conclusion
Judging from the Nokia X series, X6 is not the first X, and not the first Nokia touch screen product. But the capasitive display inside made it more fresh compare to other Nokia music touch screen products.

Apart from this cell phone performance in multi media, the advantage side is also came from free music downloads feature in promotion period (1 year). That could bring benefit to X6 user.

Nokia C6, Hands On Review and Specification

C6 is the new Symbian 5th edition phone from Nokia. It look like N97 mini with lower price. Targeting user from Mid-End segment. This phone offered with acceptable price. But is the performance can compete against N97 Mini? Check out the hands on review before you decide to buy this Nokia.

Nokia C6 Design

The C6 is a stark reminder of the N97 mini, save that the former doesn't have a tilt screen and is marginally larger. The front fascia is glossy and prone to fingerprint smudges, while the back is made from smooth matte plastic. But what surprised us was how heavy the C6 is (the slider phone tips the scales at 150g). We didn't expect that from a midrange, mass-market device with plastic as its chief component.

The C6 is clad in either black or white and you won't find any other color accents on the handset until you slide out the physical keyboard from under the screen. This is a resistive display, which means you'll need to put a little pressure on the touchscreen before it will register the command. The panel measures 3.2 inches diagonally, supports 16 million colors, and has a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels similar to a number of Nokia devices. The keyboard and directional control pad extend the phone's length considerably, which results in a sizeable gap between the touchscreen and the rectangular Call, End and Menu buttons nestled below.

At the top is where you find a 3.5mm audio jack and micro-USB port. The C6 charges via the 2mm connector found at the bottom edge, and the rim encircling the port lights up in a white glow when connected to a power source. Plugging in the micro-USB cable lets you synchronize with a PC but doesn't juice up the handset. On the right are the volume buttons, keylock and camera shutter, all with decent tactility. At the opposite side is the hot-swappable microSD expansion card slot with support for up to 16GB flash media. Finally, at the back are the onboard speakers and 5-megapixel camera accompanied by an LED flash.

Nokia C6 Features

User interface
Optimizing the home screen to bring useful and relevant content right to the top is one of the yardsticks of a good user interface. On the C6, which is based on the S60 5th Edition platform, there are six placeholders where you can run a gamut of applications and shortcuts. These include time, date, phone profiles, favorite contacts, email headers and application launchers. While it seems like there's a lot going on here, the most useful (and practical) are the ones that let you jump to a program without having to trawl through several layers of menu pages. The visuals look dated because they haven't changed much since the N97. Ticker tape-style mini apps like the ones for Facebook and AP Mobile display too little information to be of use. The same can be said for email headers on the home screen.

It gets worse with the single- and double-tap annoyances. This input method was introduced to maintain compatibility with existing S60 3.x applications. The first tap lets you select, while the subsequent tap executes the command. The user experience here can range from confusion to frustration depending on your tolerance. Given that many competing touchscreen devices offer fluid and logical user interfaces, we're inclined to think the latter. Symbian^3 is supposed to address many of these issues and it can't come soon enough. What we also didn't like were menu options in certain applications which took up precious screen estate and the confusing contextual commands. The latter was especially evident in Ovi Maps.

General
The C6 supports an array of connectivity options that we've come to expect from midrange to high-end Nokia smartphones. These include a front-facing camera for video calling, Wi-Fi, HSDPA, Assisted-GPS and Bluetooth stereo. There's also a built-in accelerometer for automatic screen rotation, alarm snoozing and call silencing. The phone's firmware can be updated over-the-air or via the PC software, but do note that the former requires a data connection if you're not on Wi-Fi. So make sure you have already subscribed to a data plan. Holding down the Menu button opens the multitasking manager.

Applications
A repertoire of applications is preinstalled and more can be downloaded from the Ovi Store. These include Quickoffice (read-only version), a unit converter, PDF reader, Psiloc World Traveler (paid subscription is required to access all features) and Shazam (full version for 30 days). There are also apps for Facebook, Friendster, Hi5, MySpace, AP Mobile, Bloomberg, ESPNsoccernet, CNN Video and a YouTube player, all of which are pretty self-explanatory. We like Ovi Maps with its complete free drive and walk real-time navigation, never mind that it's not the most user-friendly options around. The Web browser doesn't support pinch zooming, but it plays Flash videos directly from the page.

Camera
The C6 has a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash. It has a minimal focusing distance of 10cm and maximum aperture of F2.4, which give pretty decent depth-of-field in closeup shots. The camera also records VGA-resolution clips at 30fps with digital zoom possible during video capture. Our test pictures were generally pleasing and retained a good amount of details, although the automatic white balance was thrown off on a couple of occasions and resulted in a blue cast in some of our snaps. Performance
The C6 runs on a 434MHz processor with 128MB RAM and we noticed the phone struggled to keep up, especially when running multimedia-related functions such as opening the image and video galleries. During our review period, we also had to wait a couple of seconds on numerous occasions when we tried to open two or more applications. In-call audio quality was good without any distortion and we could hear the person on the other line clearly. The other party reported likewise.

The 1,200mAh lithium-ion battery is rated for up to 7 hours of talktime and 17 days on standby. On average, with push activated for our office and personal email accounts, occasional Web browsing and navigating with Ovi Maps, plus light calls and messaging, we could get about two days on a fully charged battery.

Conclusion
The C6 probably won't excite a lot of people and we don't think it was meant to anyway. This midrange Nokia smartphone with slideout keyboard gets its basics right, but is largely hampered by a sluggish and outdated user experience.
